Green Climate Fund (GCF) – giants play ping-pong

It was reported on 9 Dec that the likelihood of the Green Climate Fund being formally approved at the UN talks in Durban appeared stronger than ever and that some delegates still held out hope that a post-2012 extension period for the Kyoto Protocol could be clinched – albeit one that would cover only a silver of the world’s total carbon emissions. The EU is willing to sign up to a second Kyoto period, but only if other countries indicate when and how they will accept a legally binding agreement. Read more.

 
BNM – Second Financial Sector Blueprint

It was report on 22 Dec that the  Bank Negara Malaysia in the second 10-year Financial Sector Blueprint will consider a more relax limit on foreign participation in local banks and issue new license to financial institutions with specialised expertise that boost the development of the financial sector. The blueprint envisages that by 2020, the size of the financial system is expected to expand from current 4.3 times of GDP to 6 times.

The recommendations of the blueprint are centred on achieving nine key areas.

Zeti: European banks' exposure to Malaysia below 5pct

On 9 December 2011, Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz refuted a Nomura International report that European banks' exposure to Malaysia totalled USD50 billion (RM155 billion) or about 19pct of the country's GDP. She added it was less than 5pct. Read more online

It was reported on 19 December 2011 that the Malaysian Local Government  and Housing Ministry gave a 10-month notice to households on the implementation of the national waste segregation systems. The Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung after launching the National Recycling Day, announced that it will be enforced from September 2012 which is in line with the enforcement of the Solid Waste and Public Cleaning Act or Act 672 and the privatisation of solid waste management and public cleaning work.
